Villisca, IA

Villisca is a city in Montgomery County, Iowa, with a town plan that grew from a place first known as The Forks. The settlement was platted in 1858 and incorporated in 1869, placing its early development in the period when county seats, rail lines, stores, churches, and courthouse squares were taking shape across southwestern Iowa. Villisca sits in East Township, surrounded by the open fields and small communities of Montgomery County. The name is now closely associated with the city's documented local history and its preserved landmarks.

The most difficult chapter is the killing of eight people in the Moore family house during the night of June 9-10, 1912. The crime was never solved, and the house remains a place of remembrance and historical interpretation. The city is more than one event, though the 1912 case is impossible to separate from its public memory.
