Vineland, NJ

Charles Landis shaped Vineland as a planned settlement by requiring buyers to build within a year, clear and cultivate 2½ acres annually, and reserve roadside space for flowers and shade trees. The city became its present municipality in 1952 through the voter-approved merger of Landis Township and Vineland Borough. It is Cumberland County’s most populous municipality and, with Bridgeton, a principal city of the countywide metropolitan area; a 2022 federal estimate put its population at 60,491. Vineland also has the greatest total area among New Jersey municipalities legally classified as cities. The Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society has operated a museum and research library since 1910, while Rowan College of South Jersey’s Cumberland Campus straddles the Vineland–Millville boundary.
