Virgie, KY

Virgie is a census-designated place along Kentucky Route 1469 in Pike County, in the narrow valleys of eastern Kentucky. The 2020 census counted 274 residents. Shelby Creek runs through the community, with roads following the valley toward Pikeville and the coal-country settlements farther south. Virgie is unincorporated, but the post office, lending library, and schools give the place a recognizable center. Valley Elementary School and Shelby Valley High School serve local students through Pike County Schools.

The post office opened as Clintwood on April 3, 1890, with James M. Damron as postmaster. It later took the name Virgie after the daughter of W. O. B. Ratliff, a Pikeville lawyer and lumber dealer. That postal history sits alongside the older pattern of farms, timber, family roads, and coal work in the Shelby Creek valley. Virgie’s name also travels beyond Pike County through Tyler Childers’s song “Follow You to Virgie,” which brought a local place into a wider Appalachian conversation. It remains a mountain community organized by creek, schools, and the road through the valley.
