Virgil, IL

Virgil is a Kane County village in western Illinois, set along Illinois Route 64 between Sycamore and St. Charles. The route runs through the center, making the village part of the wider Fox Valley travel pattern even though its streets still feel tied to farms and older rural roads. Virgil incorporated in 1990 after residents organized around a proposed landfill, a late twentieth-century civic episode that shaped the village’s formal boundaries.

The community’s older roots reach back to the nineteenth-century farm and church landscape. SS Peter and Paul Church was dedicated in 1879, became its own parish in 1909, and remains a major local landmark; the school history around it helped establish the village center. General stores, a post office, an implement store, a bank, a milk factory, and a granary once served the surrounding farms. The 2010 Illinois earthquake had its epicenter near Virgil, adding a surprising geological footnote. With 289 residents in 2020, Virgil is a small place where Route 64, the church, and the prairie roads still do most of the orientation.
