Volcano, HI

Volcano, also called Volcano Village, is a large Hawai'i County census-designated place with just 736 residents in the 2020 census. It stretches across 58.6 square miles on the east side of Hawai'i Island, with a small portion in the Ka'u district, the southern edge of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park nearby, and Route 11 running along the southern part of the community. The village sits high on Kilauea's flank, in a wet upland rainforest where the road to Hilo is about 27 miles northeast. The park boundary and the volcano are part of the daily map here, not a distant attraction.

Local routines gather around a few practical places. Volcano Park on Wright Road has a community center, gymnasium, pickleball courts, playground, and skate park; the Volcano Art Center operates its gallery in the park and keeps an education campus in the village. Cooper Community Center hosts a Sunday farmers market, and the village's small businesses and lodging serve people headed toward the park. Volcano feels like a working settlement beside a nationally known landscape: wet forest, high-elevation roads, art, farming, and Kilauea all share the same address.
