About Von Ormy
Von Ormy lies along the Medina River in southwest Bexar County, where Interstate 35 crosses the historic Upper Laredo Camino Real. The river valley has been a route and gathering place for centuries; the area later saw cattle raising along the water and the arrival of the railroad-era settlement that became Von Ormy. The city takes its name from Prussian Count Norbert Von Ormay, who moved his court to the community in the 1880s. San Antonio is about 15 miles northeast, giving the town a close relationship with the larger city without erasing its river-town setting.
Today I-35 access comes through exits 140 and 141, and the Medina remains the clearest geographic thread through town. Von Ormy has also developed an unusual connection to South Texas filmmaking through the Von Ormy Film Commission, adding a creative chapter to a place better known for roads, ranches, and river crossings. The 2020 census counted 1,174 residents. Downtown, the old Camino Real alignment, and the modern interstate all meet in the same small Bexar County community.
