Wacissa, FL

Wacissa is a quiet, rural community tucked into western Jefferson County, about 20 miles southeast of Tallahassee and 16 miles south of Monticello. Home to fewer than 400 residents, it offers open countryside and a relaxed pace beneath moss-draped live oaks. State Road 59 runs straight through town, connecting travelers north to U.S. 27 and south toward the Gulf Coast. The community takes its name from the spring-fed Wacissa River, whose headwaters begin just a mile south of the main crossroads.

Much of local life revolves around the water. At Wacissa River Park, swimmers and paddlers enjoy the clear, cool springs and a scenic canoe trail that winds through cypress swamps toward the Aucilla River. Families are served by the Jefferson County school system, and everyday errands are easily handled in nearby Monticello. Tallahassee is also within an easy half-hour drive, making the area an appealing option for anyone looking for peaceful river country within reach of capital-city conveniences.
