Wagener, SC

Wagener is an Aiken County town east of the South Fork Edisto River, on the side of the county where the rail line and farm roads still set the pace. The settlement dates to 1887, when it was known as Pinder Town and later Gunter’s Crossroad. The Southern Railroad’s line to Batesburg helped the town grow, and the name Wagener honored George Wagener, a Charleston wholesaler and railroad supporter.

The crop story is part of the town’s texture too. In the 1920s and 1930s, asparagus was shipped out from Wagener, while cotton bales waited along the tracks. The central park occupies former railroad-bed ground, so even the green in the middle of town keeps a trace of the rail era. In 2010, Wagener was the largest settlement in Aiken County north of the South Fork Edisto, with Aiken County schools and the Augusta-area orbit in the background. Think of it as a small rail-and-farm town whose name, park, and street plan all point back to the same railroad beginning.
