Waiahole-Waikane, HI

Waiāhole-Waikāne is a rural Honolulu County census-designated place on windward Oʻahu, where two valley communities meet the coast along Kamehameha Highway. The Koʻolau mountains rise sharply behind the narrow strip of homes and farms, and streams run down toward Kāneʻohe Bay. It is close enough to Kāneʻohe and Kualoa to share the larger North Shore service map, but its identity is more intimate: valley roads, family land, taro patches, and the wet windward landscape set the pace.

Water is the thread running through the whole local story. Waiāhole and Waikāne were part of the plantation-era irrigation network, and the Waiāhole Ditch carried water from windward Oʻahu toward leeward agricultural lands after the system was built in the 1910s. The diversion changed stream flows and helped create a long-running fight over farming, Native Hawaiian customary practices, and the right amount of water left in the valleys. Today the place is still described in planning documents as a rural community, with agriculture, environmental stewardship, community-controlled decision-making, and the streams themselves central to its future. It is a place where the map is read from mauka to makai—mountain to ocean.
