Waimea CDP (Kauai County), HI

Waimea is a west Kauai CDP at the mouth of the Waimea River, where the road from the coast turns toward Waimea Canyon and the island's western agricultural districts. The river and bay make the location easy to read, but the town's story is layered: Hawaiian settlement, the first reported landing of Captain James Cook in 1778, maritime trade, sugar, and paniolo traditions all meet here. Waimea Town Celebration carries that history into an annual community calendar.

Waimea later became a plantation town, with irrigation ditches, sugar fields, workers' housing, and the river shaping the west-side economy. Today the town has small businesses, schools, parks, and historic sites along the main road, while Lucy Wright Park and the Cook Landing Site sit near the river mouth. Waimea's rhythm comes from being both a working west-side town and the place where Kauai's contact, plantation, and canyon roads converge. The river remains the town's clearest geographic reference point and meeting place today.
