About Wainiha
Wainiha is a community section in the Hanalei district on Kauai's North Shore, spread between mountain valleys and the coast. The 2020 Census counted 419 residents. The Lumaha'i River reaches the ocean just east of the community at Lumaha'i Beach, and the area includes a bay, canal, cliff, river, and valley. Those landforms make Wainiha easier to understand as a linear north-shore settlement than as a compact town center.
Daily movement follows Kuhio Highway and the bridges and one-lane sections that connect Wainiha with Hanalei and Haena. The road crosses a landscape shaped by streams, heavy rain, and the narrow coastal corridor; transportation projects in the district have had to account for traditional places, local stories, and the ahupuaa land divisions that run from mountain to sea. Wainiha's present-day life is tied to the relationship among the valley, the river mouths, the road, and the surrounding North Shore communities. Lumaha'i Beach is a nearby landmark, while Wainiha itself is the broader geographic setting around it.
