Wainwright, AK

Wainwright is a North Slope city with more than one name for its place in the world: Wainwright, Ulguniq, and Kuuk. The English name comes from Wainwright Lagoon, which was named for Lt. John Wainwright, while the Iñupiat name carries the older life of the region. The present village took shape around a school built in 1904, but the area had long been home to Iñupiat people before that. Along the Chukchi Sea coast, the name, the lagoon, and the village all belong to the same local map.

Daily life in Wainwright still reflects that coastal setting. Iñupiat families have long relied on hunting and fishing, including bowhead whaling, and seasonal knowledge remains part of how the community understands its surroundings. Alak School, the North Slope Borough School District’s local school, serves students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and gives the city one shared gathering point across generations. Wainwright’s story is about a named lagoon, an old Iñupiat homeland, and a school town built where those threads meet.
