About WaKeeney
WaKeeney is Trego County's seat at the meeting of I-70 and U.S. 283, a highway town with a very particular holiday tradition. James Keeney bought the site from the Kansas Pacific Railway in 1877, and the town was plotted the following year. Since 1950, the downtown has centered its Christmas display on over 6,000 lights and a 35-foot artificial tree, lit from the Saturday after Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. WaKeeney is western Kansas with a railroad-born town plan and a giant seasonal exclamation point.
