Wakefield and Peace Dale sit side by side along the Saugatucket River, functioning as two distinct yet seamlessly connected village centers. Wakefield serves as the local commercial hub, with independent shops, bakeries, and restaurants lining Main Street, alongside South County Hospital just around the corner on Kenyon Avenue. A short trip upstream, Peace Dale offers a quieter, historic setting centered on handsome stone mill buildings, the town library, and the community center. The William C. O'Neill South County Bike Path connects both villages along an old railroad corridor, stretching out toward the Kingston train station and giving residents a scenic, car-free route for walking and cycling. Because Route 1 bypasses the village centers, local streets remain relaxed and pedestrian-friendly.

Much of Peace Dale's architectural charm traces back to its days as a nineteenth-century textile mill village. Rowland Hazard founded the settlement and named it for his wife, Mary Peace, harnessing the river to power early woolen mills. Today, the historic stone mill complex and surrounding neighborhood cottages are well preserved and integrated into daily life. The Hazard family also established several landmarks that remain active community anchors, including the granite Hazard Memorial Library and the Neighborhood Guild. Outside the library stands "The Weaver," a bronze statue by Lincoln Memorial sculptor Daniel Chester French, adding a striking piece of public art to an ordinary drive down Kingstown Road.

For residents, daily routines move naturally between both centers. Wakefield handles most of the dining, shopping, and healthcare needs, as well as community gatherings like RiverFire, which brings live music, local food trucks, and evening crowds to Saugatucket Park on summer Fridays. Peace Dale serves as a cultural and recreational anchor, with the Neighborhood Guild hosting town sports leagues, fitness classes, and music lessons through the Knapp School. Right between the two villages sits Old Mountain Field, a sprawling community park with athletic fields, tennis courts, a skate park, and wooded trails. With the paved bike path tying everything together, getting outside, grabbing coffee, or running an errand is easy and enjoyable.
