Wakefield-Peace Dale, RI

Wakefield–Peace Dale combines two neighboring villages in the Town of South Kingstown, although each still has a recognizable center. Wakefield is the larger commercial hub, with Main Street following the Saugatucket River and Route 108 carrying traffic toward Narragansett. Peace Dale lies just upstream around Kingstown Road, Columbia Street, the old mill complex, and a cluster of substantial stone buildings. Neither village is a separate municipality; town government serves both from offices between them. Residential streets have gradually joined the two, but a walk through their centers still reveals different histories and street patterns.

Peace Dale grew around the Hazard family’s woolen business. Rowland Hazard invested in a Saugatucket River mill in 1802, and later generations expanded it into the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. Fire destroyed an early mill, and the stone complex built from the 1840s onward produced shawls, uniform cloth, cheviots, and serges. The Hazards also shaped the village beyond the factory, building worker housing and giving land or buildings for the town hall, churches, the Neighborhood Guild, and the 1891 Hazard Memorial library. The library lawn holds Daniel Chester French’s bronze relief The Weaver, dedicated in 1920. Wakefield developed downstream as a broader market and service center, and its Main Street eventually became South Kingstown’s busiest village business district.

Today the two centers share schools, parks, shops, and a strong connection to the rest of South County. Old Mountain Field in Wakefield is the town’s oldest public park, with sports fields, courts, a playground, pond, and community events. The 7.8-mile William C. O’Neill Bike Path passes through Peace Dale and Wakefield on much of the former Narragansett Pier Railroad grade. It links west to Kingston Station and the University of Rhode Island area, then runs east toward Narragansett; in Wakefield it crosses the river and comes directly onto Main Street. Route 1 provides the main regional highway, and the ocean beaches are only a few miles away. Wakefield–Peace Dale works as South Kingstown’s everyday center while keeping the river, mills, stone civic buildings, and old rail corridor close at hand.
