Wakefield, VA (CDP)

Wakefield Park occupies about 293 acres in this Fairfax County community, placing a large recreation system within a predominantly residential census area. Audrey Moore Rec Center opens seven days a week and contains a 50-meter indoor pool, gym, racquetball and handball courts, fitness and dance rooms, a pottery lab, and a senior center. Outside are athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, and a concrete skate park renovated and expanded in 2022. Wooded singletrack gives walkers, runners, and mountain bikers routes inside the park, while the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail continues south toward Lake Accotink and north toward Difficult Run and Great Falls. A 50-space park-and-ride at Wakefield Park is served by Fairfax Connector Route 306. Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale Campus adds a second activity center. It serves more than 18,000 students annually, and the Ernst Community Cultural Center includes a 525-seat theater, an art gallery, and spaces used for performances, exhibitions, and public events.

On weekdays, Fairfax Connector Route 834 links the campus with Pentagon Metro along Little River Turnpike. George Mason Regional Library, immediately north in Annandale, is open every day and offers meeting and study rooms, a seed library, public computers, a 3D printer, equipment lending, and multilingual periodicals. The Wakefield census-designated place had 11,805 residents in 2020. Estimates for 2020–2024 placed owner occupancy at 91.6 percent, the share of residents under 18 at 27.1 percent, and the share of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree at 73.8 percent; 20.5 percent of residents were foreign-born. Housing dominates the landscape, yet county facilities, a major college campus, and trail and bus connections organize shared activity beyond the census boundary.
