Wakpala, SD

Wakpala is a small, quiet community tucked along Oak Creek on the Standing Rock Reservation in north-central South Dakota. Its name comes from the Lakota word for "creek," fitting its location right beside the water just west of the Missouri River. The surrounding landscape is made up of wide-open prairie and rolling hills, giving the area a peaceful, rural feel. For groceries, healthcare, and everyday errands, residents generally make the short drive across the river to Mobridge.

Families in the area are served by the local Smee School District, which teaches kindergarten through twelfth-grade students from town and the surrounding countryside. The community also holds deep tribal history, including the gravesite of Hunkpapa Lakota leader Chief Gall at Saint Elizabeth Episcopal Cemetery.
