Waldo, FL

Waldo sits in Alachua County on the eastern side of the Gainesville metropolitan area, where two transportation eras meet. William Sparkman helped establish the settlement in the 1820s, and Bellamy Road carried an early route between St. Augustine and Pensacola through the area. The Florida Railroad later built toward Fernandina Beach, bringing another corridor through town. Lake Alto and Lake Santa Fe extend the local geography eastward from the city. The city had 846 residents in the 2020 census, down from 1,015 in 2010.

Current Waldo life gathers around a handful of civic places. A red caboose in the city park recalls the railroad period, and the Waldo Area Historical Society works from the city square. The Alachua County Library District's branch adds books, meeting space, study rooms, and a seed library. Waldo Community School closed in 2016, so elementary students are now zoned for Chester Shell Elementary in Hawthorne; the school connection runs through the wider Alachua County system.
