Waldron, AR

Waldron is the Scott County seat in Arkansas's Ouachita Mountain country, about 38 miles south of Fort Smith near the Poteau River. William G. Featherston settled near the present town in 1832 and opened a store and tavern; a post office followed in 1838. In 1845, surveyor W. P. Waldron laid out the town on land Featherston offered for a county seat, and the community took the surveyor's name. The 2020 Census counted 3,386 residents.

The county seat still gives Waldron its center, with the courthouse, Main Street businesses, and Waldron School District gathered around the original town grid. Timber remains central across Scott County, where much of the land is forested, while Lake Waldron, Lake Hinkle, and Square Rock Lake add a water-and-woods edge. Scenic Highway 71B drops into town from the north, and the county park supplies ball fields, tennis, and swimming. Waldron feels like a working mountain county seat: a place where the courthouse story, timber country, and river valleys meet on the same few streets.
