Walker Lake, NV

Walker Lake is a Mineral County community strung along the west shore of Nevada's namesake lake. The 2020 census counted 247 residents. U.S. 95 runs through town, about 12 miles north of Hawthorne and 59 miles south of Fallon, with the lake on one side and the Wassuk Range on the other. Walker Lake is a terminal lake fed by the Walker River, a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan. Its environmental story is visible in the water: dissolved solids now exceed 21,000 milligrams per liter, and Lahontan cutthroat trout have not appeared in sampling surveys since winter 2010.

That changing water still shapes what happens here. The lake remains a setting for boating, kayaking, windsurfing, birdwatching, camping, swimming, and picnicking; BLM's Sportsman's Beach has a public boat ramp and developed campsites, with no potable water on site. Walker Lake State Recreation Area lies immediately north of the CDP, and U.S. 95 keeps the community connected to Hawthorne, Fallon, and the wider Great Basin. The local picture is unusually direct: the road brings people through, the lake brings the recreation, and the health of the water sets the limits for both.
