Walkerton, IN

Walkerton is a Lincoln Township town in St. Joseph County, part of the South Bend-Mishawaka region. The 2020 census counted 2,096 residents. It was platted in 1856 and named for John Walker, a railroad promoter; the town's first layout followed the rail survey, which tells you why the place is there. Today, the old railroad logic is joined by U.S. 6, State Roads 23 and 104, and nearby access to I-80/90.

Fish Lake is the local geographic hook, while the town's parks department keeps the calendar moving with youth programs and an Independence Day fireworks display. John Glenn School Corporation runs Walkerton Elementary, Urey Middle, and John Glenn High, giving the town a full school ladder close to home. Walkerton has the feel of a place that grew from transportation but stayed put: rail, highways, schools, parks, and the lake all overlap in the same northern Indiana frame. The lake gives the town an extra local reference point for weekend plans.
