Wall, SD

Wall began as a railroad town on the open edge of Pennington County. The Chicago and North Western line reached the site in 1907, the town was platted that year, and incorporation followed in 1908. Its name fits the country around it: the Badlands rise nearby in long, broken bands, and the city sits east of the Cheyenne River with Interstate 90 providing the modern approach. Wall School District serves the local area, where ranching, school life, and highway traffic meet.

Wall Drug turned the town into a nationally familiar stop after Dorothy and Ted Hustead began offering free ice water in 1936, then built a roadside business around the traffic passing through. The store’s signs still point travelers toward Wall, but the place is more than a service stop: it is the closest community for visitors heading to Badlands National Park, about eight miles away, and a practical center for the surrounding ranch country. The Lakota name recorded for Wall, translated as “Town alongside the Badlands,” captures the geography in a few words.
