About Walla Walla
Walla Walla's Main Street tasting rooms occupy a county seat whose older economy was built on wheat. The city lies in a valley that has been home since time immemorial to Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla peoples; the city's own history places present-day development within the much longer story of their homelands and the dispossession that followed the 1855 treaty. American settlement accelerated around Fort Walla Walla in the late 1850s, and dryland farming made the region a major wheat producer. Walla Walla remains a service and education center for the surrounding agricultural area, with 34,060 residents recorded in 2020. Vineyards and wineries have added another working landscape rather than erased the first one. Walla Walla Community College says the valley now has more than 120 wineries, and its Institute for Enology and Viticulture gives students hands-on work in a six-acre teaching vineyard and at College Cellars, its commercial teaching winery.
Wine is visible downtown, where the local destination organization counted about 40 tasting rooms in 2026 among restaurants, shops, galleries, hotels, and maker studios. Whitman College's campus begins just east of the commercial core, placing lectures, athletics, exhibitions, and performances close to Main Street. Everyday recreation spreads farther through a city system of 15 parks, an outdoor pool, municipal golf course, recreation trails, and playing fields. Pioneer Park adds mature gardens, a bandstand, and a public aviary; Fort Walla Walla Park includes sports space, a dog park, and access to the museum district. Census estimates for 2020–2024 put the mean commute at 12.8 minutes. Valley Transit supplies a non-driving option through fixed routes in Walla Walla and neighboring College Place, and its current zero-fare program also covers Dial-a-Ride, deviated fixed-route, and Connector service.
