Wallace, CA

Wallace is a Calaveras County census-designated place at the far western edge of the county, strung along State Route 12. The 2020 census counted 479 residents. The post office opened in 1883, closed in 1945, and returned in 1951, a small timeline that captures how this place has held onto a name and a civic address even as the surrounding county changed. State Route 12 is the practical spine: it runs east through Valley Springs toward San Andreas and the county seat, and west toward San Joaquin County and the larger Interstate 5 and Highway 99 network.

Calaveras County treats the highway as a route for goods and services as well as a Class III bicycle route, although its two-lane design and narrow or missing shoulders matter. The highway supplies the main line of orientation, with scattered homes and longer regional trips organized around it. Local errands and regional traffic share the same two lanes, making every trip part of the same long geography.
