Walloon Lake, MI

Walloon Lake sits at the southeastern end of the lake that gives the Charlevoix County CDP its name, just north of the outlet into the Bear River. The community began as Bear Lake after John Jones Jr. and his family settled along the shore in 1872. A railroad stop called Melrose came first; the post office later cycled through Bear Lake, Tolcott, and Talcott before the community became Walloon Lake around 1900. Those old names still tell the story of a place shaped by water, rail lines, and the problem of finding one name that belonged only to this corner of Michigan.

By 1905, the village had a station, steamboat landing, post office, stores, churches, and summer lodging around the lake. Visitors arrived by train and steamer, then moved between cottages and hotels by boat. The railroad depot closed in 1928 as automobile travel took over, but the lake remained the center of the community’s calendar. Walloon Lake still has its own post office and ZIP Code, even though it has no municipal government of its own. Its local feel comes from that blend: a year-round settlement at the foot of a glacial lake and a resort village that expands with the seasons.
