Walnut Grove, GA

Walnut Grove is a small Walton County city nine miles west of Monroe, named for the grove of walnut trees near Thomas Evans’s early store. The post office gave the crossroads its name, and the Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town in 1905. Walnut Grove had 1,322 residents in 2020. The old commercial roster included a blacksmith, cabinetmaker, drugstore, undertaker, cotton buyer, bank, and ginnery, which tells you how much work once passed through this rural junction. Today paved roads still carry traffic in four directions, but the business area is smaller than it was.

City Hall occupies a restored historic house on the site of the original town well, and Walnut Grove’s school system keeps the town connected to a wider Walton County map. The local feel comes from the contrast: old walnut-grove crossroads, granite storefronts, and a town center that is still being reshaped while pasture and woodland remain close. Walnut Grove is a small Georgia place with more layers than its size suggests.
