Walnut, IL

Walnut is a Bureau County village built around the farm grid and the services that keep a small Illinois community moving. Incorporated on October 26, 1876, it now has a Main Street lined with a post office, banks, insurance offices, restaurants, shops, and other everyday businesses. Illinois Route 92 brings traffic through the village, while Interstate 80 and Interstate 88 place larger regional markets within reach. The town’s location gives it a practical relationship with Ottawa, the nearest micropolitan center, and with the surrounding fields that remain central to local work.

Walnut’s social calendar is carried by organizations as much as by storefronts. Churches, the American Legion, Rotary, 4-H, scouting groups, the park district, and the Working on Walnut committee all give residents ways to keep projects and traditions moving. Walnut Elementary is part of Bureau Valley School District, with older students attending in nearby Manlius. The village also has its own seasonal markers, including Walnut Days, Fall Fest on Main, and the Fourth of July fireworks. Residents are known as Walnutions, a memorable local demonym for a place where the scale is small but the network of school, farms, clubs, and Main Street ties is broad.
