About Walters

Walters is Cotton County’s seat, and its whole shape was influenced by water and a sudden move. The first settlement appeared on Cache Creek after the 1901 opening of the former reservation lands; a flood in 1902 pushed most residents south to the townsite used today. The railroad arrived at about the same time, helping cotton, wheat, ranching, and later oil move through the county. The old Rock Island depot, bought by the city in 1984, now serves as a museum, while the courthouse and First United Methodist Church remain listed historic landmarks. With the Wichita Mountains to the west and Red River country to the south, Walters reads as a working county seat with a long memory.
