Walton, IN

Walton is a Cass County town in Tipton Township, Indiana, with its story beginning when a railroad crossed the area in 1852. The town was incorporated in 1853, and its post office followed in 1856. Walton took its name from founder Gilbert W. Wall, whose original plat was laid out to secure a station on the New Castle and Richmond Railroad. A second survey added lots and land for a depot, giving the village the railroad-shaped footprint common to many north-central Indiana towns.

The tracks brought workers, travelers, freight, and a reason for stores and services to gather along the new streets. Lewis Cass High School stands near Walton and belongs to the Southeastern School Corporation, connecting the town to a wider Cass County school map. The railroad is no longer the whole story, but the 1852 founding date, the depot-minded plat, and the nearby farm country still give Walton its basic shape. It is a small town built around a line that once promised movement and growth.
