Wampsville, NY

Wampsville had 573 residents in 2020 and serves as the Madison County seat from a compact village inside the Town of Lenox. Johann Myndert Wemple founded the settlement, which was once called Wempsville. The county seat question took years to settle because Oneida and Canastota both wanted it; Wampsville finally won the decision in 1907. The county courthouse was built on donated land and ready for use in 1910, giving the village a civic role much larger than its size.

New York State Route 5 runs through Wampsville as Genesee Street, with Oneida three miles east and Canastota two miles west. The courthouse and county offices sit close to the road, alongside village homes, small businesses, and the older street pattern. Wampsville is also a useful local hinge: the village belongs to Lenox, borders the City of Oneida, and remains tied to Madison County’s court, records, and public meetings. Its story is a classic upstate compromise that turned a disputed seat into a working county center.
