Wanaque, NJ

Tucked into the wooded hills of northern Passaic County, Wanaque has a relaxed, small-town feel shaped by the Ramapo Mountains and the massive reservoir along its western border. When you move here, you will quickly notice the town is split into two distinct sections: Haskell in the south and Wanaque proper to the north. Each neighborhood keeps its own post office and ZIP code, which can confuse newcomers at first, but both share Ringwood Avenue as their main hub for local diners, pizza shops, and daily errands. Because the reservoir and steep ridgelines take up so much land, residential streets are clustered into quiet, scenic pockets.

For commuters, getting around is fairly straightforward. Interstate 287 skirts the eastern edge of town, connecting drivers quickly to the rest of North Jersey and New York. NJ Transit’s 197 bus runs right along the main corridor, offering a direct ride into Manhattan's Port Authority Bus Terminal. Local students attend borough elementary and middle schools before heading to Lakeland Regional High School on Conklintown Road. Passaic County Community College also runs an academic center in town, and the local library on Ringwood Avenue stays busy with children's programs, book clubs, and community events.

If you enjoy the outdoors, the surrounding area offers plenty of green space. Back Beach Park features ballfields, a playground, and a footbridge over the river that connects directly into the hiking trails of Ramapo Mountain State Forest. Local parks also host community fishing derbies, summer concerts, and the annual Wanaque Day celebration. Keep in mind that the reservoir is a protected drinking water supply, so swimming and boating are off-limits. When shopping for a home, pay attention to lot grading and driveway steepness, as living along the mountain ridges can mean navigating sharp slopes in the winter.
