Wapanucka is a quiet rural community in southern Oklahoma, located about 20 miles northeast of Tishomingo where State Highways 7 and 48 meet. Its name comes from a Delaware term meaning "Eastern Land People," reflecting the Native American heritage that runs deep throughout the region. The area's history began taking shape in the 1850s with the construction of a prominent Chickasaw Nation schoolhouse, known fondly by generations of locals as the Rock Academy.
