Warsaw, IL

Warsaw sits in southwestern Hancock County with the Mississippi River forming its western and northwestern edge, across the water from Missouri and near the mouth of the Des Moines River. The 2020 census counted 1,510 residents. Its history reaches back to 1814, when Major Zachary Taylor established Fort Johnson on the riverbank; the fort lasted only weeks, but the river crossing and border position continued to shape the town.

Today, city hall handles roads, utilities, permits, zoning, emergency services, trash, and animal control. Warsaw Community Unit School District 316 runs Warsaw Elementary and Warsaw High, keeping the school calendar at the heart of the city’s week. River weather and high water remain part of local planning. The riverfront gives the town its broader setting, while Main Street, city offices, and local businesses carry the daily routine. Warsaw is a small city with a long western view: one direction points across the Mississippi, another toward Hancock County, and the old Fort Johnson story sits underneath both.
