Warthen, GA

Warthen is a tiny rural community in Washington County with just over a hundred residents, sitting right where Georgia State Routes 15 and 102 meet. Much of the settlement is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, giving it a well-preserved, old-fashioned feel. The main landmark in town is the Warthen Jail, a log cabin built in 1783 that stands as Georgia's oldest surviving jail and famously held Aaron Burr for a night. A handful of vintage brick buildings from the early 1900s still line the crossroads, showing where the local cotton warehouse, bank, and drugstore used to be.

For anyone considering a move out this way, Warthen offers a very quiet, slow-paced lifestyle surrounded by open Middle Georgia farmland and woods. The old railroad depot, historic homes, and family cemetery give the crossroads plenty of character, though you will not find much commercial activity in town today. Most residents make the easy ten-minute drive south to Sandersville for grocery shopping, schools, restaurants, and everyday services.
