About Washburn
Washburn is an unincorporated town and census-designated place south of Waterloo in Black Hawk County, part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls metropolitan area. U.S. 218 provides the main regional connection, with Gilbertville and La Porte City nearby. The 2020 census counted 870 residents, and Washburn was platted in 1880. That combination gives the community a clear in-between position: close to Waterloo’s urban network, while its own streets and small lots retain the scale of a separate settlement.
Washburn’s civic setup is shared across county and school systems. The community is in Waterloo Community School District, with Orange Elementary, Hoover Middle, and Waterloo West High serving students. Black Hawk County provides sanitary sewer and water distribution, using a grinder-pump and lagoon system built in 1999 because local topography and lot sizes made septic systems unreliable. Those details make the place easier to understand than a simple map label: Washburn is a small, unincorporated community whose daily services are organized through Waterloo and the county around it.
