Washington Boro, PA

Washington Boro sits on the east bank of the Susquehanna in the northwestern corner of Manor Township, across the water from Leibharts Corner in York County. Once a borough, it is now a census-designated place; Pennsylvania Routes 441 and 999 meet here, with 441 following the river and 999 heading toward Lancaster. The settlement's older map includes hotels now converted to homes, the former Patriotic Sons of America Lodge used as a community hall, and Goodwill Fire Company No. 1, organized in 1917. Martin Chartier and his son Peter established a trading post nearby in 1718, and a monument marks the site.

The river still does work in present-day Washington Boro. A downstream dam impounds the Susquehanna in this stretch, while Washington Boro Park, river access, and the Tomato Festival organize seasonal gatherings. Local agriculture shows up at Tomato Barn on Penn Street, which raises Jet Star tomatoes and other produce. Penn Manor School District serves the area. Washington Boro is a former borough with a riverfront, farm-market, and community-event map that still reaches across the water to York County.
