Washington Grove, MD

Washington Grove was laid out in 1873 as a Methodist camp meeting ground beside the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Organizers bought 267.5 acres, opened the first ten-day meeting with 258 tents, and built the community around a Sacred Circle with avenues radiating from a central platform. The railroad mattered from the beginning: reduced fares brought visitors out from Washington, and the camp could function as a retreat without becoming an isolated backcountry settlement.

Over time tents became cottages, the open-air tabernacle became part of a permanent civic landscape, and the assembly took on a Chautauqua role in 1902. Washington Grove became an incorporated town in 1937, and the whole town was listed on the National Register in 1980. The historic district is especially known for its Carpenter Gothic cottages, a collection that keeps the camp-meeting plan visible in the streets. Today the town is a wooded pocket of Montgomery County, with about 505 residents counted in 2020 and a small commercial cluster within the historic district. Its geography is the story: forest around the houses, the Sacred Circle at the center, and the rail corridor that first connected this summer gathering to Washington. Washington Grove feels like a town that grew outward from an event, then decided to keep the original shape.
