Washington Grove, MD

Known locally as the town within a forest, Washington Grove began in 1873 as a summer camp retreat along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Early visitors pitched canvas tents in circles around a central meeting grove to escape the sticky summer heat of Washington, D.C. Over the decades, those seasonal tent sites turned into a neighborhood of gingerbread-trimmed Victorian and Carpenter Gothic cottages, linked by winding, grassy footpaths.
