Wassaic, NY

Wassaic is a hamlet and census-designated place in Amenia, Dutchess County, tucked in the Ten Mile River valley between mountain ranges. The 2020 census counted 210 residents. Its name comes from a Native word often interpreted as land of difficult access or narrow valley, though the valley became a route for people moving north from Long Island Sound. Dairy, sheep, and grain farming shaped the earlier settlement, while the Wassaic station put the hamlet on the Harlem Line.

Today, Wassaic's small footprint has two very different public faces. Metro-North's northernmost Harlem Line station sits about a mile north of the hamlet and connects the valley to the rail network; it also marks the southern end of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, built along the former right-of-way after tracks were removed. The Wassaic Project brings artists, exhibitions, music, and residency programs into the hamlet. Wassaic is a place where a farming hamlet, a rail terminus, a trail, and an arts center share one narrow valley.
