About Watertown

Watertown is a census-designated place in Columbia County, immediately east of Lake City. The 2020 Census counted 3,018 residents, and U.S. 90 meets Florida 100 at the community’s main crossroads. That road connection puts Watertown inside the Lake City micropolitan area while preserving a separate name and local history. Columbia County’s public school system serves the wider area, so the CDP’s everyday institutions are tied to the county seat a few miles west.

Watertown’s strongest story comes from timber. A Columbia County history records the community as a lumber-company town whose company owned the bank, commissary, and many other facilities; it even issued scrip that circulated as local money. That arrangement made Watertown a self-contained work community as the lumber industry expanded, and the former company-town pattern shows why a small highway junction can carry a history larger than its current population. Today the roads point west toward Lake City and south into Columbia County’s forest-and-farm country, while the old lumber story gives the place its distinctive local grain.
