Waubeka, WI

Waubeka is an unincorporated census-designated place in the Town of Fredonia, Ozaukee County, along the Milwaukee River. The 2020 census counted 640 residents. The community is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area, but its immediate map is rural roads, river land, the Waubeka Fire Department, and nearby Fredonia for more services. The National Flag Day Foundation’s headquarters and Americanism Center Museum give the place an unusual civic landmark, while local government and schools are shared across the surrounding town today.

Waubeka’s best-known chapter began in a one-room schoolhouse. On June 14, 1885, teacher Bernard J. Cigrand had his students write about the flag, an observance remembered as the first formal Flag Day celebration. The National Flag Day Foundation still runs programs and keeps the Americanism Center open during events or by appointment. The story is not just a patriotic footnote; it is why this small river community has a museum and a yearly calendar tied to a single local schoolhouse.
