Wausau, WI

Set right along the Wisconsin River, Wausau acts as the main hub for north-central Wisconsin. With roughly 40,000 residents, it delivers the conveniences of a regional center while keeping a relaxed, small-city pace. Getting from the historic east side across the river to the west side usually takes only ten or fifteen minutes outside of rush hour. The river itself winds straight through town, anchoring daily life with island parks, waterfront trails, and bridges that connect the different neighborhoods. Wausau grew out of the nineteenth-century timber boom, when sawmills along the river powered the local economy before making way for paper manufacturing, banking, and insurance. You can still spot that history in the grand historic homes on the east side and the old brick industrial buildings finding new life downtown. The city also has a distinct cultural fabric shaped by Hmong refugees who relocated here starting in the late 1970s. Today, the area is home to a vibrant Hmong community, highlighted every autumn by an energetic Hmong New Year celebration with traditional food, music, and colorful attire that draws visitors from across the Midwest.

Outdoor recreation and culture are a big draw for locals. Rib Mountain State Park sits right at the edge of town, offering scenic hiking in the summer and skiing and snowboarding at Granite Peak throughout the winter. Downtown features an internationally known whitewater kayak course on the river, along with peaceful walking paths on Oak and Fern islands. For arts and entertainment, the historic Grand Theater hosts touring shows, while the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is renowned for its annual Birds in Art exhibition. A healthy mix of jobs in healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services anchors the local economy, and while there is a weekday bus system, most residents rely on a car to get around.
