Wauzeka, WI

Wauzeka is a village in Crawford County at the confluence of the Kickapoo and Wisconsin rivers. The two rivers are the reason this small community feels tied to movement: Highway 60 crosses the village, Highway 131 leads south toward the Kickapoo Valley, and canoeists and anglers use the surrounding waterways as roads of another kind. The Wauzeka Unit of the Kickapoo River Wildlife Area adds oak woods, prairie remnants, wetlands, and river access to the local landscape.

The village was platted in 1856 by Hercules L. Dousman, with an addition laid out the following year by John McHarg. Its name comes from Waaziga, a Ho-Chunk leader whose name is associated with Pine Tree. Railroad service arrived in 1857, and local sawmills handled pine lumber that was rafted down the Kickapoo. That history still fits the geography: Wauzeka grew where water, timber, and transportation met. Today the village sits about 15 miles from Wyalusing State Park, with the Wisconsin River and the Kickapoo valley shaping its recreation and its sense of direction.
