About Waverly

Waverly began as Abington Center, a settlement founded by Connecticut newcomers along the old Warriors’ Path. Cabins were going up around 1800, and the Philadelphia and Great Bend Turnpike—today’s Main Street—was chartered in 1819 and finished in 1824. That road turned the place into a local stop, followed by the Wayside Inn in 1828, a doctor’s office, stores, and other small businesses. The old schoolhouse, built in 1830, is tied to the area’s Underground Railroad history, and the central streets are now part of a historic district. Waverly is still an unincorporated community within Waverly Township, so the town’s story lives in roads and surviving buildings.
