About Wayne Lakes

Wayne Lakes is a Darke County village built around water. What began as a gravel pit was gradually reshaped into a residential lake community with 18 lakes, more than 300 houses, a beach, clubhouse, and village office. The lakes, not a traditional courthouse square or railroad main street, organize the local map: drives and homes curve around shorelines, and the village’s everyday routines follow the water.

The 2020 census counted 693 residents, and Wayne Lakes is small enough that volunteer work and village operations remain visible parts of community life. Fishing, swimming, events, and the upkeep of shared grounds fill out the calendar, while nearby Greenville supplies the larger regional reference. Wayne Lakes has a distinct origin story among Ohio villages. Its identity came from a change in land use—from gravel extraction to a place where people live beside a chain of man-made lakes—and the result is a village whose shape can be understood from above as much as from its streets. The village’s physical plan is legible before any address is named.
