Waynesboro, TN

Waynesboro is the county seat of Wayne County, founded in 1821 when the new county needed a courthouse and jail. The original town was a 40-acre plot around those buildings; the city now sits at the junction of State Route 13 and US 64, with State Route 99 heading toward Hohenwald. The Green River runs through the city, giving Waynesboro a strong north-south line alongside the roads. The courthouse plot remains the city’s oldest organizing idea. That river-and-road position is the quick way to place town. Wayne County was formed in 1817, Waynesboro became its seat, and a 1973 courthouse fire is part of the local record. Waynesboro Elementary and Middle schools serve the city, while the municipal site points visitors back toward Ashland Academy, founded in 1843, and the early courthouse grounds.
