Waynesburg, OH

Waynesburg is a southern Stark County village where State Routes 43, 183, and 171 meet near Sandy Creek, Lake Mohawk, and the Canton–Massillon metro. The crossroads is part of the village's long story: Waynesburg was platted in 1814 and named for General Anthony Wayne, then gained a post office in 1824 under the spelling Waynesburgh. The name was simplified in 1893. The creek valley and route network still give the place its basic orientation, with the wider Canton area reached along the highways.

Education has moved from the village streets to a regional campus. Waynesburg schools once occupied a local building and later joined Magnolia and East Sparta in the Sandy Valley Local School District; the current Sandy Valley campus opened on Route 183 in 2008. St. James Elementary continues to offer Catholic preschool and elementary education. The old school history also carries an industrial footnote: Whitacre-Greer Fireproofing Company's Newtown settlement once supplied extra classroom space.
