Weatherford, TX

Weatherford's monthly open-air market creates a direct link between its courthouse-town history and present-day community activity. The Parker County seat was established in 1856, incorporated in 1858, and named for state senator Thomas J. Weatherford. Railroad service arrived in 1880, helping merchants build the commercial blocks and Victorian-era homes that still frame the historic district. At its center, the Parker County Courthouse was completed in 1886 from local limestone. The city is also changing quickly: the population rose from 30,854 in the 2020 census to an estimated 40,634 in July 2025. First Monday Trade Days grew from the nineteenth-century Stray Day, when farmers, ranchers, and merchants traded livestock and goods during courthouse trial periods. The city now holds the market on Friday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month, with vendors selling antiques, tools, farm items, crafts, food, and household goods.

A larger annual gathering takes over historic downtown on the second Saturday in July: the 2026 Parker County Peach Festival was the event's forty-first edition and included more than 200 arts, food, and activity booths. Other public settings are distributed beyond the square. The city operates Chandor Gardens, the 3.5-acre former estate of portrait artist Douglas Chandor, as a public garden and event site. At Lake Weatherford, a 4,313-foot floating boardwalk connects East and West Lake drives and supports fishing and birdwatching. Weatherford Public Library maintains roughly 95,000 physical and digital items, weekly storytimes, public internet access, and a local-history digitization project. Weatherford College's main campus adds associate, bachelor's, workforce, cultural, and athletic programs to the city's year-round calendar.
