Webster County, GA

Webster County is a small southwest Georgia county with Preston as its seat and a history that keeps changing names without losing its creek-country roots. It began as Kinchafoonee County in 1853, named for Kinchafoonee Creek, then became Webster County in 1856 in honor of Daniel Webster. Preston and Weston consolidated into a unified county government in 2009, so county and town history now share the same administrative frame. The Kinchafoonee, Choctahatchee, and Lanahassee creeks give the map its older Muscogee-language layer, while the 1915 courthouse and Webster County Schools keep the civic side visible. The Johnson Home Industrial School adds a significant Black education story to the county's past.
