Webster, SD

Webster was platted in 1881 and incorporated as a city in 1895, after the Milwaukee Railroad reached the site and Day County made it the county seat. That role still gives the town its shape: county offices and services draw people from across northeastern South Dakota, while the city sits in a region of glacial lakes, cropland, and hunting country. The name comes from James Perry Webster, a pioneer settler, and an older local nickname, the city in the forest, comes through in early school histories.

Local routines cluster around a few institutions. Webster Area Schools operate elementary, middle, and high schools in town, and the Museum of Wildlife, Science & Industry spreads Day County history across 23 buildings. That museum is also South Dakota's official State Fishing Museum, a fitting distinction in a county known for its lakes. In the surrounding lake district, Pickerel Lake Recreation Area adds campgrounds, trails, boating, and fishing. Webster remains a county-seat town whose school, museum, railroad-era center, and lake country all belong to the same map.
