Wedderburn, OR

Wedderburn sits on the north bank of the Rogue River mouth in Curry County, across from Gold Beach on U.S. 101. The Isaac Lee Patterson Memorial Bridge connects the two communities, turning the river from a barrier into the central road crossing of the south coast. The bridge opened in 1932, is 1,898 feet long, and remains a working piece of the Oregon Coast Highway. Wedderburn's name came from R. D. Hume, a fishing businessman who named the community after his family's Scottish home.

That fishing history is still visible in the lower Rogue's working-waterfront story, even as current routines center on the bridge, school, and river. Central Curry School District operates Riley Creek Elementary and Gold Beach High School, and U.S. 101 carries traffic through the community toward the coast and inland Curry County. Oregon transportation crews are planning another round of bridge preservation work after earlier repairs in 2020. Wedderburn's local clue is the combination of a company-town origin, a major historic bridge, and a river mouth shared with Gold Beach.
