Welaka, FL

Welaka is a quiet riverfront town of around 700 residents, tucked along the St. Johns River in Putnam County. Life here moves at an easy, unhurried pace, where golf carts are a common way to cruise the tree-lined streets and head down to the local docks. Welaka got its start in the late 1800s as a citrus community and mineral spring resort, and that old-school river-town charm still defines the area today.

Most of everyday life revolves around the water and the outdoors. The town is famous for its bass fishing, with quick boat access out to Lake George and miles of scenic riverbanks. Welaka State Forest provides plenty of hiking and equestrian trails under mossy live oaks, while the local fish hatchery offers a great spot for an afternoon walk. Located about an hour and a half south of Jacksonville, it is an ideal spot for anyone looking for quiet days by the river.
