Welaka, FL

Welaka is a Putnam County town on the St. Johns River, with 714 residents at the 2020 census. It incorporated in 1887, after an earlier agricultural economy built around orange groves, cotton, and livestock. By the late nineteenth century, mineral springs had made Welaka a resort stop; after the Big Freeze of 1895 damaged the fruit country, fishing and the river became even more important. Nearby Mount Royal preserves a much older layer, with an archaeological site linked to a possible Timucua village dating from roughly 1250 to 1500.

The Welaka National Fish Hatchery was built in 1926 and transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1938. Its ponds, aquarium, observation tower, and striped-bass work make the hatchery part of the town's present-day map, while Welaka State Forest follows the riverfront beyond it. The town is about ninety miles south of Jacksonville, but its daily geography points toward Lake George, County Road 309, and the St. Johns. Welaka has a Florida river-town story with springs, fishing, archaeology, and a working conservation facility all in the same frame.
